Most people already heard of the HOLI Indian festival but few know about the HOLA, that happened last week-end.
A festival of brotherhood and good food
Hola Mohalla is a festival celebrated annually in the month of March, a day after Holi. Sikh communities meet in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab for a three-days festivities.
Rich in religious tradition and cultural significance, it celebrates brotherhood and bravery. The event includes the performance of Gatkas, a traditional Sikh martial art, along with sword-fighting competitions and horse-riding stunts. Some modern-day Nihang Sikhs have even swapped horses for motorbikes, because, well, evolution 😉
Another area displayed is with the chakri, a war instrument made of balls connected by string. And for the whole duration, participants dress with their traditional blue robes and embellished dastars (towering turbans).
No festival is complete without food & beverages! At the holiest site in Sikhism, visitors indulge in:
- Thandai: A cooling drink with milk, rose water, poppy seeds, nuts, and saffron
- Stuffed Paranthas & Rotis: Delicious Indian flatbreads, crispy & flavorful
- Halwa & Jalebi: Classic sweets to end on a high note!
